Golden Sun

Golden Sun Limousins was founded in 2006, because of a truly great privilege granted to me by my parents, Frans and Ellie Lottering. With their support, I, Eandro Lottering, started my own Limousin Cattle Stud at the age of 16. At the time, I purchased my first female Limousin cattle in South Africa, as female stud animals were somewhat limited in Namibia. Both my parents are very passionate about the cattle industry and more so, they are experts in the field since their success has been evident over the years. Therefore, I believe that the apple does not fall far from the tree. An important lesson I learned from them is that; “You purchase what is needed in your herd, not necessarily what solely fits your budget”.  I consider genetic progress the most important in any industry, but even more in the stud industry and thus I regard it of utmost significance to be involved and continue with the Limousin, especially in Southern Africa.

But why Limousin?

Limousin are genetically one of the purest and oldest breeds in the world. This European breed is originally from the Limousin province in France but is now bred all over the world with one of the biggest gene pools around. The breed is renowned for their vigorous crossbreeding properties of which calving ease, slaughter percentages, effectiveness and adaptability are the most sought after.

I believe that these combined properties set the Limousin above the rest. The breed has some of the best feed efficiency figures of all breeds. This feed efficiency flows down in the crosses and results in animals producing higher beef quantities on the same dry material volumes. Scientifically proven to be more efficient in both feedlot terminal-sire programs as well as maternal cow-calf programs.

Limousin is distinguished for carcass qualities that, in my opinion, far surpass any other breed in the industry. This is brought about by the special Limousin Profit gene known as F94L. This gene increases the high value cuts like Rump, Loin, Fillet and Silverside with up to 19% compared to non-gene carriers. All this increased beef yield is brought about with no extra feed or any increased calving issues. This means that pure bred animals have slaughter percentages of up to 66% – resulting in an increase of 3-5% in slaughter percentages in crossbreeding programs. On top of this, the Profit gene also results in 4-8% higher beef quality with cuts being more tender.  Higher profit margins with less work are a cattleman’s dream.

Almost 50 years of Limousin breeding and vigorous selecting in Africa, has resulted in an exceptional beef tool in the commercial ranchers’ breeding arsenal. To me, it has been proven that this breed excels in increasing profit in crossbreeding programs – both in terminal crosses and maternal breeding programs.
