Makalani Brahman
Makalani Brahman began because we wanted to breed our own cattle. For us, the crossbreed between the Bos Taurus and the Bos Indicus has always been valuable for commercial farming. The Simmentaler has meat and milk, whereas the Brahman brings the hardiness and adaptability. The most important factor is what you can earn subsequently, with the ox production, making these the two breeds of choice. To us, Simmentaler/Brahman crossbreed cattle produced the best results.
In our studs, our selections are based on milk, fertility, adaptability, and structural correctness. Stud cattle undergo strict selection; scanning to measure the muscle surface area; marbling and fat deposition and DNA tests. Selected bulls go to the NFI station to measure the feed turnover. The feed turnover is of great importance in Namibia and offers the commercial farmer the opportunity to choose bulls, which perform well on the field with less feed.
Bulls are raised as free-range veld cattle and are only fed for auction purposes. We can thus proudly offer buyers a hardy, field adapted, medium framed bull.
We also participate in livestock shows to be able to determine the level of our stud production. It is always important to measure yourself against others and see if you are still moving in the right direction. To date we have achieved great results at all yearly livestock shows which certainly distinguishes our studs.
Our principle when selecting our own stud bulls, is to especially consider the dam’s genetics. This creates a firm genetic base. Stud breeding is our passion. With this passion and careful consideration, we offer the best genetic material to the Namibian and international cattle market.
